These books are are fun to read as Pride and Prejudice or Harry Potter, with literary elements of both. All of the romance and comedy of manners of Jane Austen and the excitement of friendship and adventure of A.J. Rowlings abound in these books. I highly recommend to mature readers all of their books. The two I offer here are less violent and less sexual than the others, although there is no overt sex in any, just adult themes in some of the others. Pilot's Choice is a love story. Balance of Trade is a coming-of-age tale in which a 17 year-old Terran human is taught to be a trader for a Liaden clan (not Korval). These are the two that a teacher can suggest to youth. These books are a blend of hard science fiction, sociology, and fantasy in a blend as skillfully done as Herbert did with Dune. Liadens are a formal society for whom balance and honor are words to live by, except in their dealings with others such as Terrans. Liadens humans have wizard and psychic-healer phenotypes in their gene pool, but are closely enough related to Terran humans to interbreed with them. There are 50 ancient clans that are important members of the Council of Clans, the governing body of the planet Liad. Some of these clans are intergalactic traders. Most of the novels of the Liaden Universe Series tell the story of the Clan Korval, focusing on the marriage and children of Er Thom yos Galen (Liaden) and Ann Davis (Terran). Their children and foster son are wizards of awsome skills. The Clan is rich, powerful, and financed by their trading company. Almost all clan members are spaceship pilots, and there are several traders in each generation to keep the family company in business. Trading involves trips to many planets and the challenges of living in space. The tree Jaleza Kazone is the part of the Clan Korval's clan sign and mascot. The actual Jaleza Kazone is an ancient sentient wizard. The cats in Korval's home are in close spiritual contact with Jaleza Kazone and the wizards of the clan. |
