Tackling Classroom Management

Books advising on classroom management abound, and so do links on the web.

Mostly, they advise...

• making a personal connection to each student, understanding the nature of individual differences, motivations, & actions; and connecting often to each student in his preferred unique way
• actually liking your students, and letting that come through unobtrusively with fairness and respect
• carefully planning transitions from one activity to another and manipulations of supplies
• using lessons appropriate to your students and the time-frame
• confidently leading the students in the learning activities that you have planned
• knowing your stuff--the lessons
• being flexible in the face of unexpected occurances or student needs
• connecting knowledge and skills to student background knowledge, abilities, needs and interests
• taking advantage of teachable moments in ways that foster student interest
• finding ways to get students to accept the need to work hard at learning even the boring stuff
• makeing students feel safe from harm and ridicule, especially during instances when they would feel threatened.
• monitoring what they do
• keeping expectations high
• planning, planning, planning and being prepared
