Living Green makes Sustainability Personal
First it was recycle, and Gaia, and eco-friendly. Now it is living green. the programs designed to manage one's energy signature, preserve species diversity, care for the environment, reduce pollution, and guarantee that our progeny inherit an Earth in livable condition. Living Green is the meme for actions we take and decisions we make in our everyday lives that foster sustainability.
From children's books to non-fiction, economics to ecology, and office products to archetecture, living green is the new politically correct way to live and the bandwagon to ride.
Lessons from the Media
There are several TV networks devoted to teaching us about these issues and products. Some of the messages are these.
- Animal Planet
- Science Channel
- Green Planet
- National Geographic Channel
- HGTV
- Science Channel
- Discovery Channel
- LinkTV
- PBS
- UCTV
- and others
- We are encouraged to use alternative energy sources such as solar cells, windmills, and fuel cells;and alternative fuels such as biodeisel.
- Coming soon are refrigerators cooled by sonic vibrations, homes lit by fiber optics and light tubes, and vegetables grown in the kitchen.
- Portable water filtration devices and composting toilets combined with solar heating for homes, water and food preparation can make homes self-sufficient of the energy grid.
- Cellular phones and wifi, laptops connected to the internet through satellite and cellular towers further cut the physical connections to a wired grid that currently pollutes the atmosphere with greenhouse gases as it burns non-renewable fossil fuels.
From the Discovery Channel Store you can link to the associated television networks Discovery Channel, Science Channel, Animal Planet, and others. Here you can purchase the dvd's seen on these channels as well as teaching software such as a Cosmeo - 6 Month Subscription, which uses film clips in its K-12, all subjects lessons.
Government Encouragement
Our government encourages living green through government grants and tax credits. Additionally, government websites inform citizens on issues of sustainability. Then there is the information found on the UN websites since the movement is worldwide and UN supported. In fact, the World Bank has some programs that encourage green living and sustainable development.

Get on the Bandwagon!
Living green reduces our dependence on oil, reduces the greenhouse gas emissions, reduces landfill waste, preserves forests and fosters biodiversity. Living green means using products that are made of renewable resources, recycled materials, energy efficient mechanisms, and manufacturer committments to carbon credits or reforestation contributions.
Clothing made mostly of natural fibers or artificial fibers from plant latex, leathers and rubber for shoes, organic cleansers and insect repellants: the list goes on. There are even directories of green retailers! The meme of sustainable, green living is changing the way we shop, drive cars, build homes and think about the world. Read the essay on ecocapitalists.

Companies now purchase energy credits and contribute to programs that plant trees. These companies advertise their participation in reforestation and/or recycling programs as customer participation in green living being what the customer gains when purchasing the products, or just as an assurance that the customer is buying green and thereby fostering sustainability. Read Meme: Ecocapitalist.
Internet hosting, software, telecommunications and software companies have joined together in a consortium called The Green Grid to determine strategies and make policies on how to conserve energy and be more sustainable. Read Microsoft's comments on it in it's webpage with a link that implies: "Our commitment to the environment."
