the story behind
the spider mites riding the gears at the MEMS lab in the videos below.

http://www.sandia.gov/mstc/technologies/micromachines/movies/index.html

http://mems.sandia.gov/scripts/images.asp Both of these links are webpages of images of micromachines made and distributed free for public use by Sandia Labs. One page is of picture; one of QuickTime Movies. There are links to other Sandia Labs sites for more information. You will have to do some searching to find out how big a spider mite is to find out how big these MEMS machines are. Compare these images to the image of the nanoguitar.

http://www.psigate.ac.uk/ This site is a news directory for all areas of physical science and engineering. If you click on the logo in the margin to the left you will link to this website. This site keeps an archive of news articles on physical science topics, links to other physical science sites, an RSS newsfeed service and a search bar for physical science topics and sites.

I found the latest articles and pictures on the nanoguitar here at PSIGate. Look up nanoguitar in the search bar there.

Question: What is the difference between microtechnology and nanotechnology? What is MEMS? Use the PSIgate site to find out. Wikipedia has sections on nanotechnology and Cornell's photo of the nanoguitar, also.

http://www.news.cornell.edu/releases/Nov03/NEMSguitar.ws.html Cornell's article on both nanoguitars.

Question: What kinds of microscopes are used to take pictures of MEMs devices and of nano devices?

http://www.foresight.org/nano/index.html an organization concerned with current information and future forecasts of the nanotechnology industry and research presents this website of articles and links.

http://www.actionbioscience.org/education/uddin_chowdhury.html  an article about nanotechnology education.

http://www.actionbioscience.org/newfrontiers/chen.html  an article about the ethics of nanotechnology

http://www.zyvex.com/nano/ pages from an introductory textbook with basic definitions and technologies with links to other sites.

http://www.nanotechnology.com/ news articles portal with related discussions.

http://pubs.acs.org/cen/nanotechnology/7842/7842nanotechnology.html paper on the ethics and future of nanotechnology from a nanotech research society with links to other sources.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/nanotechnology.htm article for the general public that deals with issues discussed in the links above.

http://www.sciam.com/nanotech/ links to articles on nanotechnology from Scientific American.  Just the titles will get you thinking!

http://www.fda.gov/nanotechnology/ Read what the Food and Drug has to say about nanotechnology and pharmaceuticals and foods.

http://www.nanotechnology.net/ another news portal.  Look for bionanotech news.

http://www.topix.net/tech/nanotech yet another news portal, presenting the articles of the latest headlines and archives of previous articles

http://www.memsnet.org/mems/what-is.html defines MEMS and links to articles on microdevices technology.  Learn the difference between mems and nanotech. Nice picture of a mems device.http://www.memx.com/ Another organization listing jobs, articles and information about MEMS. Picture of a MEMS device using gears.  Get links to sites that offer freebies that teachers will find useful.
